Abstract
As pointing out the epistemological limits of positivism in describing and explaining the humanity, the alternative methodological principles such as phenomenology, hermeneutics, dialectical philosophy, existentialism, and analytical philosophy are suggested. Benner takes a phenomenological stance based on the work of Heidegger and Ponty and focused on the lived experiences of being healthy and being ill.
Benner uses an interpretive approach to identifying competencies, by that many problems in nursing education and nursing practice can be solved.
